Triathlon Shoe Laces Buying Guide

by Katherine A. Roccasecca

Triathlon shoe laces come in fun colorsTriathlon is a sport where the difference between winning and losing can come down to how fast you can change your shoes. That is why you need triathlon shoe laces. Even if you aren't chasing a spot on the podium, getting your running shoes on quickly is more fun than fumbling with conventional laces. This guide will explore the benefits of triathlon laces and compare the features of several brands.

2XU Performance Locked Laces

2XU Triathlon Shoe Laces2XU Performance Locked Laces lace into your shoes like normal laces, but the elastic and sliding lock allow you to slip your shoes on quickly and easily. There is secure fit option and an adjustable fit option. A cord tip covers the knot at the end of the laces.

Install and Use the 2XU Performance Locked Laces

  1. Remove the 2XU Performance Locked Laces from the packaging, and remove the cord locks and cord tips from the laces.
  2. Lace your shoes as you normally would.
  3. With your foot in the shoe, press the lock open and thread one lace end through each hole. Slide the lock to your shoe and release the lock.

OPTION A: For a secure fit, go to Step 4.
OPTION B: For an adjustable fit, go to Step 5.

  1. For a secure fit, knot each lace right at the lock opening to ensure they never move. Skip this step if you want an adjustable fit.
  2. Thread both lace ends through the cord tip from narrow end to wide end, and tie them in a knot. Use scissors to cut the excess off, and pull the cord tip to cover the knot.

If you set up your 2XU Performance Locked Laces for adjustable fit, you can leave your shoes slightly open in transition to make sliding your foot in easier. Once you slide your foot in, pull the lace with one hand, while sliding the lock down to the shoe with your other hand.

If you set up your 2XU Performance Locked Laces for secure fit, just slide your foot into the shoe. The elastic has enough give.

Xtenex Triathlon Shoe Laces

Xtenex Flared Triathlon Shoe LacesXtenex Laces are the simplest laces and have no plastic parts. You lace your shoes with them as you normally would, but you never need to untie or retie them because the elastic allows you to slip your feet in and out.

The unique feature of the Xtenex Laces is the knots. As you lace them, place more knots between eyelets for a looser fit and fewer knots for a tighter fit. Watch our videos to see how this works.

Xtenex Tapered Triathlon Shoe LacesThe difference between the Xtenex X-series and XH-series is the shape of the knots. The X-series are flared and hold more securely. The XH-series are tapered and easier to lace into the shoes.

The number following the X in the X-series laces refers to the knot size. (Xtenex even makes an X502 for snowboard boots!) We carry the X300 laces which work with any shoe that has an eyelet size of approximately 3 to 4 mm.

Install and Use the Xtenex X300 Flared Knot Laces

  1. Remove the Xtenex Laces from the package.
  2. Lace your shoe with your foot in it, because you will be adjusting the fit as you go. Hold the section of lace already in the shoe while pulling the lace, in order to stretch the lace and collapse the knots. Leave more knots between eyelets for a looser fit, fewer knots for a tighter fit.
  3. Once your shoes are laced, you can leave the lace tips loose, or tuck them into your shoe, or knot them together, or knot them individually and cut off the excess.

In transition, simply slide your feet into your shoes.

Yankz Sure Lace System

Yankz Triathlon Shoe LacesYankz Sure Lace System is the most time consuming to set up of the triathlon shoe laces, but allows a lot of flexibility in adjustment for a set-it-and-forget-it system.

Install and Use the Yankz Sure Lace System

  1. Remove the Yankz Sure Lace System from the packaging, and remove the triangular toe tips from the laces.
  2. Start with the Yankz! logo on the lock facing toward your ankle. Begin at the top of the shoe and lace from the outside in. Continue lacing to the toe of the shoe.
  3. There are two holes side-by-side on the bottom edge of the toe clip. With the Yankz logo facing outward, thread one cord end up through each of them and out the sides. Slide the toe clip to the shoe. Pull down on the laces to secure them in place.
  4. Pull up on the cord loop and slide the T-bar lock to the shoe. Slide the T-bar into the lock to secure it.
  5. Then bring the loop down and secure it in the hook at the top of the toe clip. Your shoe should slip on and off easily while staying secure when you run. If so, proceed to step 7.
  6. If the laces or too tight or too loose, unhook the loop, release the lock, and adjust the tension of the laces as needed.
  7. When you are finished with the adjustments trim the excess off the ends of the laces, leaving about 3 inches. Then tuck the ends into your shoe.

In transition, simply slide your feet into your shoes.
