Before it ever occurred to me that I'd be doing a DIY triathlon, I signed up at my local YMCA for a triathlon they were putting on. I have been a member for a very long time, so this was something that was exciting for me. I'd get to swim in a pool I swim in all the time, ride my bike on roads I ride on all the time, and then run through neighborhoods where I actually know whose house I’m passing. But, the big thing with this event is it’s very hard to get people to come to a triathlon in June that has an indoor swim.

Des Moines Dirty Duathlon
2 mile Trail Run, 10 mile Mountain Bike, 2 mile Trail Run

Scott and Katherine competed in the Des Moines Dirty Duathlon as a team. This is a duathlon so you run/bike/run. Scott did the run portions of this event, and Katherine biked. This is an annual, off-road event on hilly single track mountain bike trails. Normally for this event, you don’t know if it is going to be super cold, or raining, or what the weather is going to be like. This year it was perfect!

Blessed by beautiful weather and endowed with a challenging trail system, the 2014 Des Moines Dirty Duathlon was difficult and fun at the same time. Temps were in the 70s, which is the most pleasant I have had for the Dirty Du.

Well I was able to wrap the 2014 season with a strong overall performance at the Olympic distance after an out of balance Bluff Creek and the shortened Hy-Vee. The weather for the inaugural Cyman Olympic was gorgeous, save for the northwest wind that started at 15 mph and ended up increasing to over 20 mph over the course of the race.
