    MY FIRST IRONMAN!

I signed up for Ironman Wisconsin on 9/8/14, and after I signed up I immediately had a little anxiety thinking about what the next year of my life was going to look like to accomplish something I once thought was impossible.

Iowa Games Sprint Tri is always an event that is a little special to me. It was my first official outdoor triathlon three years ago.

I was looking forward to this event as I haven’t been racing much this year. My focus has been mainly on Ironman Wisconsin training, but it’s nice to break up the training with a race or two in the middle. Last year I did well at this event so I was eager to see how I could manage this year. Continue reading

  • DIY Triathlon

by Scott Carkhuff, Kyle’s Bikes 2014 Triathlon Team

You can host a DIY TriathlonBefore it ever occurred to me that I'd be doing a DIY triathlon, I signed up at my local YMCA for a triathlon they were putting on. I have been a member for a very long time, so this was something that was exciting for me. I'd get to swim in a pool I swim in all the time, ride my bike on roads I ride on all the time, and then run through neighborhoods where I actually know whose house I’m passing. But, the big thing with this event is it’s very hard to get people to come to a triathlon in June that has an indoor swim.

Scott and Katherine competed in the Des Moines Dirty Duathlon as a team. This is a duathlon so you run/bike/run. Scott did the run portions of this event, and Katherine biked. This is an annual, off-road event on hilly single track mountain bike trails. Normally for this event, you don’t know if it is going to be super cold, or raining, or what the weather is going to be like. This year it was perfect!

This event was a bittersweet event for me. I was trying to train for the Des Moines Marathon so my focus wasn’t solely on this event. I had upped my mileage running and that had taken most of my focus. Also the weather had started to change so the temp was a little cooler and it looked like the wind was going to make an appearance.

  • Hy-Vee Triathlon: Scott's Report

    August 31, 2014

Hy-Vee Triathlon is probably the biggest triathlon event in Iowa, and it normally is an Olympic-distance event. This year they shortened the course to a sprint due to some flooding on the bike course. This event brings in a lot of pros and also a lot of good competition from in and out of state. It’s a well-organized event and good for anyone doing their first triathlon or their 100th. Continue reading
