Iowa Games Triathlon: Scott's Report

by Scott Carkhuff, Kyle’s Bikes 2014 Triathlon Team Scott Carkhuff at the 2014 Iowa Games TriathlonIowa Games sprint tri was a good event. It played into my strengths and that showed on race day: 400 m swim, 15 mile bike, 5 k run, all pretty flat except one hill on the bike which I didn’t mind. The swim was short and fast, which is fine by me. I make up most of my time on the bike, so the shorter the swim the better for me. The swim went fine: no major difficulties or anything, everything went smoothly.

Scott crests the hill on his bikeBike was 15 miles and it was three laps around the same loop. There was one hill on this loop that caused any real effort, so we had to do it 3 times, and that’s where I figured I could gain most of my time. My thought was “get up the hill at a quick pace and settle back into your pace,” and that theory seemed to work well for me.

Run was a 5 k. It was a flat two-lap run. I held a pretty steady pace and maintained a 7:10 average. I finished 2nd overall at this race. Hard work pays off! Scott Carkuff took second overall at the Iowa Games Triathlon Full results from the Iowa Games Triathlon are online at True Time Racing.
