- Ice Breaker Triathlon, which began in 2008
- Y-Tri at Red Flannel Run, a new addition to the 30-year-old run race
- Pieathlon, another long-standing event.
This marked my fifth year of running in the Iowa Market to Market Relay race, a ~75 mile (depending on the year) team relay event from Jefferson to downtown Des Moines, primarily following the Raccoon River Valley Trail.
Each year, I participate in several running races and triathlons including marathons and Ironmans, but this easily is my favorite event each and every year. As a team, we are lucky to have Kyle’s Bikes as a sponsor of the event and loaning the sweet minivan for us to use. Continue reading
You would think that 340 miles of gravel with 28,000 feet of climb over 31 hours and 16 minutes could not be summed up by one word, but for me it says everything. I’m not great at expressing thoughts on paper, but I’d best do it now because some of the memories I have are slipping away at an exponential rate!
Let’s talk about the first edition of Iowa Wind and Rock! This is the thoughtful creation of Sarah Cooper, Steve Fuller, and Dennis Grelk. A race created out of a sheer love of gravel for people that share the same love… an event that promised to be an absolutely epic show that would unravel as we pedaled along.
100 km Gravel Bike Race

CIRREM by the numbers: 250 signed up, 40-ish started the race, and 17—for some reason or another—decided to push through the interesting day that was to unfold.

I have competed in many competitions: 5Ks, Market to Market Relay, IMT Des Moines Marathon Relay, Taming of the Slough, Annawan Canal Ambush, Trestle Hustle Duathlon, and the Above and Beyond Adventure Tri.
Many of these were trying races that make you push yourself beyond where you have been before. The Des Moines Dirty Duathlon would prove to be test I had not come across before.
Spotted Horse Gravel Ultra: Short Course
150 Mile Gravel Bike Race
St. Charles, Iowa
Saturday, October 6, 2018
Sarah Cooper is certainly making a name for herself as a race director. 2018 is the third year for the Spotted Horse Gravel Ultra, and it ended up being the toughest year yet. The standard race is 200 miles, while you can opt to do the 150 mile “sprint” course.
I am relatively new to gravel cycling and ultra cycling. In 2017, I rode the 150-mile sprint course on my Specialized Fatboy. For 2018, I decided to go for the 200-mile race on my BMC CrossMachine in ultra gravel trim.
Unfortunately, a couple of mistakes and some bad luck ended my day early.
