Why aquabike you ask? Well, if you enjoy triathlon and least enjoy running then this race is for you. For me, the Bluff Creek Aquabike helped to serve as a good checkpoint in my Des Moines Triathlon training—only seven more weeks to go. (Everyone should sign up for this inaugural event to show support). I've been lollygagging in preparations for the Labor Day weekend race, and I wanted to get a wake-up call. The aquabike was perfect because I just did the Dam2Dam half marathon and felt good about my run.

This was another new race for me with the Kyle’s Bikes/Discount Tri Supply team. The Bluff Creek Triathlon takes place in Don Williams State Park, just North of Ogden and South of Pilot Mound. The latter town is still riding its fame of being home of “Twister Hill” from the epic midwestern storm-chaser film of several years back. I’d ridden Twister Hill once on RAGBRAI a few years ago, and all I remembered is that it was a comparative monster of a climb compared to what we’d been doing that day or week. So a week before the race, when Coach Julie instructed “ride a hilly route,” I loaded the SHIV and did a little scouting ride of the race course.

This was my first time racing Bluff Creek Triathlon. I had raced at Don Williams Park several years earlier when the Iowa Games Triathlon used to be hosted there. The courses were similar.

Bluff Creek Triathlon at Don Williams Park north of Ogden has been one of my favorite races for a while now. I have done the course twice as a sprint and once as an "almost Olympic." The swim was cut short in 2011 due to water temps being very cold, as the race used to be in May. This is also a very similar course to the one Iowa Games Triathlon used to run in the same park which I did several times before they moved it to Easter Lake.

This was the first Olympic-distance race that I have done in a couple of years for a variety of reasons, so I have to say I was more nervous than usual going into this one. Continue reading

    Swim

We were shuttled over to the start from transition as the race started on the opposite side of the lake. I had just enough time to take a GU, drink my Gatorade, throw on my wetsuit, and jump into the water for a quick practice swim. As soon as I exited the water, the athlete briefing began. Without much time to take in the swim course the gun went off and the Olympic-distance athletes were off in a hurry.

Couldn’t have asked for a better morning to have a triathlon, even better yet, my longest race so far. Weather was perfect and everything was shaping up for a good day. The race started at 8:00 a.m. We had to take a shuttle to the swim start, and then we would swim across the lake. This race was wetsuit legal, which is kind of odd for this time of year in Iowa. This would also be my first time wearing a wetsuit in a race. Note to self: “Apply body glide to the back of the neck!” I got a nice little mark from the wetsuit rubbing. Nothing major though.
