Here in this four-season climate, many of us athletes (including myself) race on some version of the following schedule: Early Season (March to June), Peak Season (June to September), Late Season (September to Mid-November), and Beer/Pizza Season (Mid-November until March). In part, this schedule solidifies the role of the early season races in keeping us honest as amateur athletes. Setting baselines, if you will, is the purpose and value of the “Suffer-fest” that takes place in the cool breezes of March and April. These races can and almost always will give us the opportunity to develop goals for the peak and late season efforts.
