The night prior to the race, the swim was changed to a 1.9 mile swim, all with the current. Cozumel was experiencing an ‘el Norte’ or a cold front from the north that brings wind, storms, cold (relative, of course!), and different currents to the island and surrounding waters.
The two official practice swims on Friday and Saturday were canceled. However, I swam both days and thought it was just fine. On Friday, it was a bit more challenging than normal, but, for me, swimmable. I could see how that day it could have been scary for a weak swimmer.
