The Garmin Forerunner 620 with HRM-Run Monitor is the most advanced GPS running watch available. Of course it has a high-resolution color touchscreen and tracks distance and pace, and (with a HR monitor*) heart rate. As with other Garmin products, you can download workouts to the watch and upload completed activities to Garmin Connect. And, when paired with your iPhone® 4S or later, it has all of Garmin’s newer “connected features”: automatic uploads to Garmin Connect, live tracking, and social media sharing.

What makes the Garmin Forerunner 620 stand out is that it can be paired with the HRM-Run monitor.* The HRM-Run monitor has the same size and fit as the soft strap HR monitor, but it includes an accelerometer so it can measure three running metrics not available before:

  • Cadence: It measures your number of steps per minute and total number of steps.
  • Vertical oscillation: It measures the bounce in your run in number of centimeters.
  • Ground contact time: It measures the the amount of time in milliseconds in each step that your foot spends on the ground.

The HRM-Run monitor is compatible with other fitness products, but they will just display heart rate when paired. Only the Garmin Forerunner 620 (and a few new Garmin watches) has these running metrics.

With the HRM-Run monitor* you also get additional fitness metics. Or, as Garmin puts it, there’s a coach inside the Forerunner 620. This coach estimates your VO2 max so you can track your improving fitness. It also uses this data to predict your finish time for a given race distance. Like any good coach, the Forerunner 620 is a recovery advisor. It can estimate your state of recovery immediately following a run and give you a countdown to your next effort, and it provides a real-time assessment of your recovery in the first minutes of each run.
